The timeline presented to you on this page will show you the different stages involved for patients wishing to undergo bariatric surgery.

The time indicated between each stage is approximate and may vary over time.

An update will be carried out regularly

  • Registration is the first step in securing an appointment with a member of our team of healthcare professionals.
  • To register on the waiting list for your first meeting, please complete the questionnaire in the "Registration" tab.
  • You will receive a confirmation email. If you haven't received it within 24 hours of submitting the form, please try again. If the problem persists, click "here" to contact us.
  • At this stage, medical referral is not necessary
First meeting with the team

We receive over 200 new requests per month due to the long wait list.

When your turn comes, you will be invited to participate in a group meeting aimed at learning about the process, procedures, as well as various topics surrounding weight loss surgery. Two options are available to you:

  1. Webinar (online information session): by invitation, you will receive an email with a link to join the live session. You don't need a camera and microphone, only internet access and sound. Throughout the presentation, you will have the opportunity to ask questions via chat.

  2. Face-to-face group: by invitation, you will have the opportunity to participate in a group session, in the auditorium of the Sacré-Coeur hospital. Contact details will be sent to you when we contact you.

Appointment with your surgeon

Your first appointment will be held at our satellite bariatric surgery clinic located in the Town of Mount-Royal.

  • A medical referral from your family doctor must be provided for this step.
  • Your file will be evaluated and completed by your surgeon
  • If the information is complete and you are eligible, a surgery will be proposed and, with your consent, a request for admission will be sent to our bariatric surgery outpatient clinic at Sacré-Coeur Hospital in Montreal.

  • Sometimes, before being able to make a decision, your surgeon may ask you to take additional tests, in order to offer you the best possible choice, depending on your health condition.
Preoperative meeting
  • A few weeks to a few months (about 3) before your surgery:
    • You will have an appointment with a nurse at Sacré-Coeur hospital to:
      • Prepare your medical file for the operation
      • Perform preoperative examinations (blood tests, electrocardiogram, etc.)
      • Receive education about the surgery (preparation, day of surgery, convalescence, etc.)
    • You will also meet with a nutritionist and receive a food guide specific to bariatric surgery

Depending on your health condition, the type of surgery and availability, your surgery will be performed either at:

  • The Sacré-Coeur Hospital in Montreal
  • Jean-Talon Hospital
  • Rockland MD Surgery Clinic
Follow up

Following your surgery, you will have several follow-up appointments, they are part of the process and essential for a smooth journey. You will be invited to make an appointment 1 month, 6 months and 1 year after your surgery. Your surgeon may, for various reasons, ask to see you sooner.

Thereafter, your follow-ups can be every 6 months or every year, or according to how you progress.
